A stone or cobbled driveway is similar in principle to block paving in the way in which they are installed but that for these types of driveways a much greater breath of sizes and shapes of stones are utilised and typically do not follow the uniform block or brick shape associated with block paving. The precise cut and angular shape of blocks make the laying of them relatively straight forward.
When cobbles or stones are laid they are normally much more irregular which provides a much more natural look and often what people may call a period style. However, depending on the type of stones you choose will determine the look you will achieve from a style akin to house drawn carriages to stylish finishes which will set off a parked sports car.
Regardless of which style you choose we will be able to provide a structurally sound driveway since the key is to ensure that the base layer creates a good foundation for drainage and for the setting of the top layer - regardless of what that might be.
When it comes to choosing which type of stone you want to go for the list can be quite extensive with new options becoming available each year as less popular style are replaced with what's currently on vogue. If you have sourced a particular stone which isn't one of our that's not a problem we can operate on a fit only basis but we will need to discuss what may or may not be covered in terms warranties and of course coordinating delivery and start dates will also need to be considered.

A Cobbled driveway type of road dates back many centuries and can still be found in many UK and European cities with those people who can remember horse drawn carriages being pulled on them making quite a racket. However, with modern suspension and rubber tyres driving over a cobbled driveway can still be felt but in a subtle way, which provides character instead of discomfort.
Whilst new cobbles are most frequently fitted, on occasion customers will be able to get their hands on reclaimed stones and these can be fitted in much the same way. Whilst these stones are likely to be a little more irregular they can be turned and set to provide the best top surface with filler set between gaps to minimise weed and moss growth. As this is not one of the new modern low maintenance driveways you should expect some level of cleaning and weeding between cobbles as that's the natural place for seeds to set themselves. However, as with most cleaning regimes - if you kept a 'little and often' approach to cleaning the net result will be a small amount of time and effort in total.
Indian stone is often referred to as Indian stone paving since the stones are in actual fact more like slabs. However, they are much much visual that standard paving slabs, with much more character. Whilst they are available in a variety of colours the most popular by far are buff and grey Indian stone. What is also growing in popularity is mixing up a number of different coloured paving stone. This creates a great looking mosaic effect and means you can have a very unique looking driveway. A good combination of colours includes dark and light blue grey, a rustic red and golden buff. Since each colour will also come in a few different sizes it provides an opportunity to be creative with your driveway.
As with all driveway types it may also be more cost effective to get your side and rear pathways and patio done too but if your driveway slab stone come in both thicknesses it may be an opportunity to save some cost on the path and patio by selecting the patio strength slabs.
The main attraction of this stone is it's colour - blue grey is a a very traditional shade for a cobbled style driveway and Belgian fits the bill very well. It is a limestone but don't think that because of this is going to be soft and crumble. This pavestone is very dense and as a result it is robust, hardwearing and provides a high level of water resistance. Because of his last feature, the benefit it provides is that since water can ingress into the stone it makes it more ice and frost resistant. Its popular shape has a flat top with rounded edges, which makes it a smoother ride than many other cobblestone options.
Granite is another hard stone, which is also often used for driveways and is quite often made in sett form. rather than a rounded cobble a set is more angular and closer to a block or brick in shape. Granite setts are quite often available as carpet stones. Carpet stones, sometimes called carpet mats, comprise of a number of stone pre-connected together typically with a wire mesh. By pre connecting the 'mat' can be laid straight down with several stones already being pre-spaced by the mesh which will save valuable time - especially when laying a large area. You may well have seen this approach in garden centres for patio or stone areas mostly to form a circular setting of stones. So whilst this does provide the advantage of time it does provide a pre-determined flow of stones. If you do want to run the stone down a particular shape it is possible to combine both set and individual stone to achieve this but the extra time will add to the total cost.
As you can see there are many options and choices which can be quite daunting at first. However, there's no need to panic. We can discuss options with you, pros and cons and which options may or may not be feasible with the budget you set aside for this project.
Whilst a gravel driveway is usually being replaced with another type or driveway for some people this is still a better option than what they currently have and from a budget perspective it is one of the lowest cost options to move away from having grass to maintain in a front garden. Sometimes we will install a combination of paving stone or block paving along with enclosed sections of gravel we can work quite well in keeping costs down and getting a drive and front garden upgrade.
If this is something you are also considering please let us know as we can install these too.

This continues and will always continue to be a contentious subject. Early versions of resin driveways using the bonded technique have lead to owners of this type of driveway wishing they never chose this in the first instance. However, using modern materials and choosing a resin-bound option will give you a modern low maintenance driveway. Block paving and tarmac continue to be good options as does Indian stone. Budget will play a large part in what driveway type is best for you and also what vehicles and activities will be carried out on your driveway too.
The short answer is no. However, if you choose a non-permeable option then you should expect to have a soak-away drain fitted too. There are some councils that require permission to be obtained to install a non-permeable driveway as the concern if that more water will be sent to the local drain system adding to the strain and increasing the potential for flooding. As a permeable surface permits water to soak through at the source, water will end up in the ground beneath your driveway, not the sewage system.
Block paving can be either, as can resin so please let us know if you have a preference.
Most driveways will require little maintenance if they are looked after properly and sealed as advised. If left unattended for years then jet washing and / or spraying with a pathway cleaner can remove and delay new moss or weeds forming. New tarmac, patterned concrete and resin bound surfaces require the least maintenance in their early years. Cobbled driveways can be a little more problematic depending on the gaps left between cobbles.
To be honest, we are only limited by your imagination. We have some more common block paving designs shown on our block paving page but essentially anything is possible provided the paving blocked sizes are compatible. Even if they are not they can be cut and will still look good.
Resin Driveways are generally the most expensive but if you search hard enough you can find certain stones which will end up being more expensive but generally speaking a resin bound drive will cost the most.
